A Partner and Advocate for Malden Students

Reblogged from the Malden Observer, originally published on March 27, 2016.

Malden High School has the most diverse student body in all of Massachusetts but it’s also one of the region’s most economically disadvantaged schools. Our students are caught in the middle. Continue reading A Partner and Advocate for Malden Students

Press Play >> College Bound, Ep. 1

At Summer Search, our mentors and College Access and Success staff form deep connections with our students. They work step-by-step with them to build college-going mindsets and behaviors, and to navigate the process that will ultimately lead them on the path to college. And it works!

We asked a few of our high school seniors to sit down with their mentors to discuss their college-bound journeys. Our students even got to flip the script and ask some interview-style questions of their own!

So, sit back, relax, press play and enjoy listening to College Bound, Episode One: Continue reading Press Play >> College Bound, Ep. 1

Ready for the Real World

“Real world” work experience is a term many college students often hear about when applying for jobs. At Summer Search, we’re always looking to find ways to help our students get that experience, both in college and even in high school.

Mentoring For Success

Last week, Summer Search was invited to participate in an engaging online conversation about one of our favorite topics…

They invited several organizations (including both mentoring orgs and their supporting partners, like the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation) for a discussion about ideas and key issues surrounding the importance of mentoring in youth development, as well as ways to work together to improve outcomes for young people across the country.

As the name suggests, this grant is a real game changer for our Bay Area sites, as it will allow us to serve even more students who are, in turn, changing the game and the status quo for their own lives and their communities.

One such game changer is Alexis Flores.

When we first met Alexis, he was as a self-conscious 15 year-old who was buried in his schoolwork and chores, unaware of the opportunities around him and unsure of his own leadership potential. Continue reading Alexis: Game Changer
