“My experience with Summer Search pushed me to believe in myself and realize I am capable of more than I know. The Summer Search family truly saw my potential even when I did not, and when a young person realizes that there are people who are rooting for them, that can make all the difference.”
That’s Dalia Martin Del Campo, a Summer Search Bay Area alumna who is currently making a difference in Peru as a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV).

Welcome to the second installment of our #SummerSearchGrad series, where we are celebrating the post-secondary milestones of the students in our College Success program.
While many of these moments happened a few months ago, it gives us such joy and inspiration to look back on them now, and to give each deserving Summer Searcher who shared their photos a chance to be in the spotlight!

It’s graduation season and we’re celebrating our Summer Searchers!
Over the past two months, the students in our College Success program have been sharing their post-secondary milestones — from college graduations, to certificate completions, to transfer plans, and more — on social media using the hashtag #SummerSearchGrad.
Here are a few of those stories from our amazing — and likely very tired, yet relieved — graduates.

Summer is here!
While the longest day of the year officially marks the beginning of the season, our summer started two weeks ago when our first group of amazing young people began embarking on their summer adventures.

But these trips are hardly a “day at the beach,” despite what the wonderful moment captured above might indicate. These are challenging, learning-filled, and transformative journeys that test our students mentally and physically to help them develop the skills needed to succeed in school and in life. Reflecting on their lives is a key part of every Summer Searcher’s journey. After our high school sophomores complete their first summer program, they write a reflection letter to process their Summer Search experience thus far.
This is an opportunity to put into words who they are, and to take an honest look back at the challenges, triumphs, and growth that has happened since joining Summer Search. It’s a practice that, alongside their weekly conversations with their mentors, helps students integrate these profound summer experiences into their lives, as well as a chance to practice writing a personal statement for college.
These pieces are generally composed after the summer programs are completed during the start of the students’ junior years. Not everyone writes a reflection ten years later… but that’s just what Bay Area alumnus Alvin Sng did! Continue reading A Summer Reflection… 10 Years Later
We’re all about young leaders. Summer Search’s mission is to help students from low-income backgrounds strengthen the skills needed to become college graduates and leaders in their communities.
However, there are other young leaders that are playing a significant role in the Summer Search world. These are groups of altruistic young professionals who are dedicated to supporting our mission. They go by different names across the Summer Search network — there’s Boston’s Young Leadership Committee (YLC), Philadelphia’s Young Professional’s Network (YPN), and Seattle’s Alumni Board, while the Bay Area and New York City both refer to their respective groups as the Associate Board (AB). Meet Areli Hernandez, a Bay Area Summer Searcher currently in her second year at Santa Clara University (SCU).
In addition to her impressive course-load as a triple major (yes, triple!) in Political Science, Spanish, and Ethnic Studies, (with a minor in Latin American Studies) and staying involved on campus as a student ambassador, Areli recently got accepted into the Fulbright Summer Institute in the United Kingdom! Continue reading Areli Hernandez: Scholar and Role Model
Last week we shared a story about Justin Bethune, a Summer Search Bay Area alumnus who created an empowering photo project aimed countering the negative stereotypes surrounding Black men often shown by the media.
While Justin is behind the camera in his work challenging racial biases and perceptions, Summer Search Seattle alumna and fashion model Ebonee Davis is using her platform in front of the camera to speak up against racial injustice.

“I’ve decided to dedicate my life to taking positive images of Black men and creating a platform for their voices to be heard.”
Those are the determined words of Summer Search Bay Area alumnus Justin Bethune. At the start of Black History Month this year, Justin announced in a post on Medium that he was launching The Bethune Project, a photo campaign on Instagram.
