The following is a guest post written by Chris Long, Defensive End for the Philadelphia Eagles, philanthropist, and supporter of Summer Search.
My name is Chris Long, and I’m playing the entire 2017 NFL season without collecting a paycheck because I believe that education is the best gateway to a better tomorrow for EVERYONE in America.
That’s why I am excited to partner with Summer Search on a couple of important initiatives to make a difference for deserving young people.
First, there is my Pledge 10 for Tomorrow campaign. In my 10th year playing professional football, I wanted to celebrate the awesome opportunity I’ve had by giving back to the communities that have given me that gift. I committed my first six game checks to fund scholarships in my hometown of Charlottesville, VA, and pledged my last 10 checks to organizations supporting educational equity and opportunity in cities that I’ve called home throughout my NFL career. On November 28, 2017, #GivingTuesday launches the charitable season when many organizations focus on holiday and end-of-year giving. Just last year, more than 1.6M gifts were made across nearly 100 countries to raise $177M worldwide! Continue reading Save the Date for #GivingTuesday

In difficult times like these, turning to community is more important than ever. At Summer Search, our Bay Area team has been all-hands-on-deck reaching out to our students — many of whom live in the affected areas of Santa Rosa, Napa, and St. Helena — to ensure they and their families are safe, connected to resources, and have space to process together. Here at Summer Search, we are fortunate to have partners that generously support the work that we do, creating greater equity by increasing the number of students from low-income backgrounds who successfully enter and complete college.
Recently, Summer Search New York City received two significant public funding grants totaling $140,000 to support college access services for the young men and women in our NYC high school program. Continue reading Partnerships to Honor Our Young Men and Women
Guest post written by Summer Search Bay Area alumna Cicely Li, after participating in a conference call discussion regarding the hiring of Summer Search’s next CEO.
Recently, leaders of the Summer Search alumni community were invited to share input on which qualities we would like to see in Summer Search’s next CEO. The call with Summer Search’s National Senior Director of Talent Acquisition, Dana Hagenbuch, and Commongood Careers (a search firm that focuses exclusively on nonprofit leadership searches) focused on uncovering key priorities, including how a new leader could inspire greater alumni engagement. If you walk into our Summer Search office in Oakland, one thing you’ll see, along with our mentors and students buzzing around, is a large, colorful mural that adorns the wall of our glass-enclosed conference room.
Not only a beautiful addition to our office space, this work of art has significant meaning behind it — it was conceived of and painted specifically for Summer Search by Bay Area alumnus, and local artist, Ivan Lopez. Continue reading Ivan Lopez: An Artist’s Inspiration
