Speaking Up in Philly

Our mission is to help our students become college-educated leaders who give back to their families and communities. That means every Summer Searcher is a leader, and their leadership can take many forms.

One way they can lead is by speaking up, by lending their voices to issues that are important to them, no matter how difficult, uncomfortable or emotional.

Recently, two Philadelphia Summer Searchers had opportunities to do just that, to speak up and be vocal and visible leaders in their community. Continue reading Speaking Up in Philly

This Friday, May 27 is Proof Point Day, a time to bring visibility and voice to the hundreds of thousands of first-generation college graduates in the United States.

We are so proud to see a national initiative that honors those who are the first in their family to graduate college. 92% of Summer Searchers are first-gen, and as the #ProofPointDay mission states, first-gen leaders are “worthy of celebration — being the first wasn’t easy.” That’s an understatement! John Legend: Fighting for Justice with Love

“Think about how you can use the power of your education to do great things: to highlight important truths, to inspire action, to support a cause that’s close to your heart, whatever that cause may be.”

Those were just a few of the inspiring and thought-provoking words from John Legend, the keynote speaker at Summer Search New York City’s 2016 Leadership Gala.

That’s right, the John Legend! The Academy Award-winning and ten-time Grammy® award-winning recording artist, and dedicated philanthropist was kind enough to share his story with a room full of eager and grateful Summer Search students, alumni, staff and supporters on Wednesday night in New York City. It’s Super Bowl week! #SB50

As the final two teams remaining in the NFL playoffs (the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos) prepare to go head-to-head on the field, we at Summer Search are celebrating the fact that we get to be on the same team as our fellow Super Bowl 50 Fund “Game Changer” Award recipients.

We’re so grateful to have been included in this group of five game-changing Bay Area non-profits who are benefitting from the generosity of what some are calling “the most charitable Super Bowl, ever.”

When In Doubt, Reach Out

It’s the new year, and here at Summer Search that means we are getting ready to interview and enroll new students into our program.

January is also National Mentoring Month, as proclaimed by President Obama, where many different organizations shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives. #NationalMentoringMonth

We asked a few of our alumni and current college students if they had any advice for our new Summer Searchers as they begin their journeys creating foundational relationships with their mentors, and one theme kept “reaching out” at us… Continue reading When In Doubt, Reach Out

Goodbye 2015…

As our 25th anniversary year officially comes to an end, we want to thank everyone who made this year so special.

It has been an amazing and humbling experience to look back on the past 25 years and recognizing all the lives we have transformed at Summer Search, and all the people who have helped us along the way.

2015 — a year for looking back, and a year for looking ahead: Continue reading Goodbye 2015…

Cicely’s Journey

2015 has not only been our 25th anniversary year, but it also has been a record-breaking year for alumni giving. In fact, alumni philanthropy has skyrocketed more than 75% in the last year. Nearly 200 alumni have collectively contributed more than $123,000, exceeding six figures for the first time ever.

One alumna, Cicely Li from San Francisco, shared her own Summer Search journey and why supporting the journeys of more students can make all the difference:
