At Summer Search, our mentors and College Access and Success staff form deep connections with our students. They work step-by-step with them to build college-going mindsets and behaviors, and to navigate the process that will ultimately lead them on the path to college. And it works!
We asked a few of our high school seniors to sit down with their mentors to discuss their college-bound journeys. Our students even got to flip the script and ask some interview-style questions of their own!
So, sit back, relax, press play and enjoy listening to College Bound, Episode One: Continue reading Press Play >> College Bound, Ep. 1
“Think about how you can use the power of your education to do great things: to highlight important truths, to inspire action, to support a cause that’s close to your heart, whatever that cause may be.”
Those were just a few of the inspiring and thought-provoking words from John Legend, the keynote speaker at Summer Search New York City’s 2016 Leadership Gala.
That’s right, the John Legend! The Academy Award-winning and ten-time Grammy® award-winning recording artist, and dedicated philanthropist was kind enough to share his story with a room full of eager and grateful Summer Search students, alumni, staff and supporters on Wednesday night in New York City. Did you know that on this date one year ago (March 1, 2015), Summer Search Founder Linda Mornell’s book Forever Changed was officially published?
In honor of the anniversary of this book — Linda’s thoughtfully-crafted collection of some of Summer Search’s most inspiring stories, and magnum opus on the benefits that summer programs and insight mentoring have on young people — we’d like to share a powerful and very personal review of Forever Changed. Here at Summer Search, we are developing plans to better support our Black and Latino men through our Males of Color Initiative. Specifically, that means enhancing our outreach and enrollment practices to increase the number of Black and Latino male students referred to, and enrolled in Summer Search.
We are also encouraged to see that, across the country, there is a groundswell of recognition of the systemic and institutionalized barriers surrounding these young men, and the need to better serve them. Continue reading Changing the Narrative: It Takes a Village
“Real world” work experience is a term many college students often hear about when applying for jobs. At Summer Search, we’re always looking to find ways to help our students get that experience, both in college and even in high school.
For many years we have been able to leverage our generous network of supporters to connect Summer Searchers in college with internship opportunities. Last year, we had more than 160 students who participated across our seven locations.
One of those students is Summer Search New York City‘s Yomayra Guerrero. Continue reading Ready for the Real World
As Presidents Day approaches, we thought it would be fun to share a few of our favorite presidential quotes. And while there have been many great words of wisdom from the White House over the years, we decided on focus on five that also reflect some of our values and ideals here at Summer Search.

It’s Super Bowl week! #SB50
As the final two teams remaining in the NFL playoffs (the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos) prepare to go head-to-head on the field, we at Summer Search are celebrating the fact that we get to be on the same team as our fellow Super Bowl 50 Fund “Game Changer” Award recipients.
We’re so grateful to have been included in this group of five game-changing Bay Area non-profits who are benefitting from the generosity of what some are calling “the most charitable Super Bowl, ever.”
