“For over 20 years, I witnessed the power that came from telling your story. For the person brave enough to share their story, and for the people who are fortunate enough to be in their presence.”
In the story of Summer Search, Katherine Kennedy has played many important roles. She was our founder Linda Mornell’s first hire in 1995, she was a mentor, an executive director, a fundraising guru, and a speech coach—helping students and alumni tell their story in front of hundreds of people at Summer Search signature events.
Katherine left Summer Search at the end of 2015 to start a new chapter in her professional career. Now, nearly two years later, we caught up with her to see what she has been up to, and how she is staying connected to Summer Search. Continue reading Storytelling with Katherine Kennedy
As our 25th anniversary year officially comes to an end, we want to thank everyone who made this year so special.
It has been an amazing and humbling experience to look back on the past 25 years and recognizing all the lives we have transformed at Summer Search, and all the people who have helped us along the way.
2015 — a year for looking back, and a year for looking ahead: Continue reading Goodbye 2015…
2015 has not only been our 25th anniversary year, but it also has been a record-breaking year for alumni giving. In fact, alumni philanthropy has skyrocketed more than 75% in the last year. Nearly 200 alumni have collectively contributed more than $123,000, exceeding six figures for the first time ever.
One alumna, Cicely Li from San Francisco, shared her own Summer Search journey and why supporting the journeys of more students can make all the difference:

As you may have noticed, we’ve been celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year and reflecting on the impact Summer Search has had on thousands of students. And as we look ahead to our next 25 years, we’re excited to see our first generation of leaders carrying on the Summer Search legacy, and passing the torch to the next generation.
In part 1 of our Ripple Effect series, we introduced you to Natalya, a Summer Search alum who encouraged her own daughter (Mila) to follow in her footsteps and embark on a challenging, life-changing summer experience.
Well, Natalya wasn’t the only one.

If you didn’t already know, sharing stories is incredibly important to us here at Summer Search, especially with our students. We ask them to share their stories all the time (in their initial interviews, in regular check-ins, in reflection letters, at events, etc…). As they tell — and retell — their stories, they begin to rewrite what they believe is possible for themselves.

Our 25th Anniversary Leadership Week has come and gone. And wow, what a time it was!! Let’s review…
Young Leaders in the City
The week started off with Summer Search New York City’s Young Leadership Committee (YLC) Cocktail Event. The YLC is a group of young professionals who share Summer Search’s commitment to college success for all youth in New York City. Other than being a great evening of music, mingling and NYC skyline views, the event also raised more than $75,000! Continue reading Flame On: Leadership Week 2015
Our 25th birthday week is finally here!

With SAT season getting underway next week (the first test of the new academic year is Oct. 3!!), high school students across the country are preparing to take the nation’s most widely used college admission test.
For those of us who have already taken the SATs, each year we breathe a sigh of relief for the fact that we no longer have to spend time memorizing formidable (causing fear or apprehension) lists of vocabulary words.

One of the things we ask of our students during their initial interviews is that they share their story with us. Now, you have the chance to do the same!
As part of Summer Search’s 25th Anniversary, we have been diligently collecting stories from our entire community as we remember the past 25 years, and look ahead to the next 25.
