Last month, we announced that Summer Search was a finalist in the third annual Renewal Awards, a national competition recognizing local organizations driving positive change in their communities.
Thanks to Allstate, The Atlantic, and everyone in our community who voted for Summer Search, we won the runner-up prize of a $10,000 grant!

“When I talk about Summer Search, I talk about the whole experience I got both those summers. I talk about the mentoring experience and how I’m able to sit down with someone to talk about my overall life trajectory and experiences; where I stand, and where I hope to be and how I am going to progress.”
That was Summer Search Boston college student Mahdi Mohammed talking to his College Success Mentor, Nate Campbell. The two of them have had many conversations over the years. But this particular one — on a stage and in front of hundreds of people — was a little different.
At last year’s Leadership Dinner in Boston, Mahdi and Nate volunteered to participate in a live question and answer discussion to talk about Summer Search, and give those in attendance an idea of what a mentoring relationship looks like as well as provide a glimpse at both the student and staff perspective. It’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives.
At Summer Search, mentoring is our everything! Unlike many other youth organizations, we partner our students with a full-time, professionally-trained staff mentor who builds an authentic and long-lasting relationship. Our mentors work incredibly hard to form honest and trusting relationships with their students, to remind them that their voices matter, and to be there for them in their personal and academic lives.
We are so fortunate to have a team of dedicated mentors doing this work across our five regions, making those real-life impacts, day-in, and day-out. Continue reading Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1
At Summer Search, we’re always looking for ways to help our students strengthen the skills they need to thrive in school and in life. Sometimes those opportunities come from community partners and organizations in our own backyard – not just in the wilderness of Colorado or the Costa Rican jungle.
Last month, about 15 Summer Search Bay Area college students and alumni were invited to a special career development event at the corporate headquarters of transportation network giant Lyft in San Francisco. Continue reading Summer Search Joins Lyft’s Community Week
Corporate partnerships are important to Summer Search’s success for many reasons, and global investment management company BlackRock has recently gone above and beyond by financially supporting two of our regions as well as providing volunteer support.
Earlier this summer, BlackRock hosted our Bay Area Annual “Dare to Lead” Conference, an all-day series of career readiness workshops to support our college students as they prepare for life post-graduation. Continue reading #ICYMI: Daring to Invest in Future Leaders
In a Facebook post showcasing a vibrant photo of herself at the Hawa Mahal palace in Jaipur, India, Chentese Stewart jokingly declared, “I belong on someone’s brochure!”
This Philadelphia Summer Searcher, who recently finished her junior year at Gettysburg College, is no stranger to traveling, and could probably make her own travel brochure with all the photos of the places she’s been.
