Nathaly Abreu: Challenging Stereotypes

Nathaly Abreu is a Summer Searcher from New York City, currently in her senior year at Colby-Sawyer College. This story was originally published by Colby-Sawyer earlier this month, written by Kellie Spinney with photography by Michael Seamans. Reblogged with permission.

Communication studies major Nathaly Abreu ’17, the daughter of Dominican-born parents and a native of the Bronx, has spent most her life defying stereotypes. “As a Latina, people think I’m crazy and sassy. Sure, I can be kind of sassy, but I don’t think that is because I’m Latina,” said Abreu. “I think it’s because that’s who I am.”

Another stereotype Abreu has encountered is the perception that she is undeserving of a college education. “Just because I am from an underprivileged area doesn’t mean I am uneducated or unworthy of going to college. I feel like a lot of people believe that,” said Abreu. “I want to break away from that stereotype.Continue reading Nathaly Abreu: Challenging Stereotypes

Summer Searchers in the White House

“There is nothing more important you can do for yourself than get your education.”

Those were just a few of the many meaningful words from First Lady Michelle Obama, as she addressed a room full of college-bound students at the White House during her third annual Beating the Odds Summit, part of her Reach Higher and Better Make Room campaigns.

And two of those students in the audience were Summer Searchers! Brittnee Anderson and Odanel Brito-Sanchez, along with mentor Kaitlin Irvine, joined 130 young men and women from across the country, representing youth who have overcome substantial obstacles to graduate high school and make it to college. Mentoring For Success

Last week, Summer Search was invited to participate in an engaging online conversation about one of our favorite topics…

In honor of National Mentoring Month, our friends at iMentor hosted the #Mentor4Success Twitter Chat. They invited several organizations (including both mentoring orgs and their supporting partners, like the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation) for a discussion about ideas and key issues surrounding the importance of mentoring in youth development, as well as ways to work together to improve outcomes for young people across the country.
