#Snapshot: A Summer Search Love Story

Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a glimpse of what’s going on at Summer Search.

Danny-Rochelly-med

This is Summer Search power couple Danny Araniz and Rochelly Fajardo Araniz. They have been married for two-and-a-half years and been together for eight. Both were students in our Boston program and have been leaders in the Summer Search community, serving on Boston’s Alumni Board for a number of years. Meet Nick and Ching

January was an exciting month at Summer Search.

Our high school mentors have been busy deepening their relationships with our students, helping them integrate the reflections from their summer experiences into their lives, while also placing juniors on their second summer programs and preparing to welcome a whole new class of sophomores to Summer Search. Our College Access and Success mentors were also hard at work supporting students with college applications, financial aid, and their pursuits of their bachelor’s degrees. Plus, we announced a cool partnership with Chris Long and Michelle Obama, and we celebrated National Mentoring Month!

We were also excited to welcome two new senior leaders to the organization: Nick Hutchinson, our Chief Operating Officer, and Ching Tao, Vice President of Finance.

Nick and Ching have definitely hit the ground running to start the new year, and while the two of them have been busy getting to know Summer Search, they were kind enough to answer a few questions to help our Summer Search community get to know them. Continue reading Meet Nick and Ching

Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1

It’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives.

At Summer Search, mentoring is our everything! Unlike many other youth organizations, we partner our students with a full-time, professionally-trained staff mentor who builds an authentic and long-lasting relationship. Our mentors work incredibly hard to form honest and trusting relationships with their students, to remind them that their voices matter, and to be there for them in their personal and academic lives.

We are so fortunate to have a team of dedicated mentors doing this work across our five regions, making those real-life impacts, day-in, and day-out. Continue reading Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1

Thanking Your Mentor

At Summer Search, gratitude is part of everything we do. One of our core values is to “say thank you seven times.”

So, while that means we don’t need an excuse to express gratitude, we were beyond excited that yesterday was “Thank Your Mentor Day” (part of National Mentoring Month)!

This was an opportunity for our students, alumni, and staff to reflect on the ways their lives have benefited from a caring, supportive relationship with a mentor, and for them to say thank you. Continue reading Thanking Your Mentor

Seattle Summer Reflections, Part 1

Each summer, our students receive scholarships at the end of their sophomore and junior years in high school to embark on experiential education programs — ranging from wilderness expeditions, to college stays, to international service trips — in order to help broaden their world view and expand what they believe is possible for themselves.

In fact this summer, we are sending more than 1,000 students all over the world! That adds up to a lot of airfare. Continue reading Seattle Summer Reflections, Part 1

2015 College Decisions

Back to School. It’s just around the corner. For Summer Search’s graduating high school class of 2015, Back to School is a time to take that new, next step forward… onto a college campus.

Of the 484 graduating seniors, 446 are planning to continue on to college. That’s a 92% matriculation rate* for our Summer Searchers, compared to a rate of just 51% for their low income peers nationally.*
