Summer Search has officially closed our 2019 summer travel season, with our last group of students returning home from their challenging and empowering summer experiences last month.
In the end, nearly 900 high school Summer Searchers received full scholarships to attend experiential education programs all over the world – ranging from wilderness expeditions, to academic programs, to international cultural and service trips.
Students (and a few staff members) on summer experiences in Thailand and Ghana with The Fuller Center for Housing, in Tahoe with the Gateway Mountain Center, and at the University of Delaware’s Edge Summer College Program.
Congratulations to every single Summer Search student who embarked on a summer adventure, took risks, and achieved incredible accomplishments! Continue reading Summer 2019: A Look Back
There’s a popular saying that “the path to success is not a straight line.” At Summer Search, we support our young people on their journeys to success, which can indeed take many different pathways, twists, and turns.
Arsel Perez is deeply committed to helping his family, while also striving to find his “dream career” and securing his own successful future.

Meet Anh, Daniela, and Jennifer — three Summer Search Bay Area students who completed their first summer experiences this summer!
This is a particularly important milestone because students embark on their first summer experiences shortly after joining Summer Search as sophomores, sometimes unsure of what to expect. The challenges they face and the growth they experience sets the foundation for intensive mentoring when they return.
From left to right: Anh, Daniela, and Jennifer.
Now as high school juniors, they have been partnering with their mentor to reflect on and learn from their triumphs and setbacks… and were kind enough to share some of their personal reflections with us. Continue reading 2018 Summer Reflections
Summer is here!
While the longest day of the year officially marks the beginning of the season, our summer started two weeks ago when our first group of amazing young people began embarking on their summer adventures.

But these trips are hardly a “day at the beach,” despite what the wonderful moment captured above might indicate. These are challenging, learning-filled, and transformative journeys that test our students mentally and physically to help them develop the skills needed to succeed in school and in life. “For over 20 years, I witnessed the power that came from telling your story. For the person brave enough to share their story, and for the people who are fortunate enough to be in their presence.”
In the story of Summer Search, Katherine Kennedy has played many important roles. She was our founder Linda Mornell’s first hire in 1995, she was a mentor, an executive director, a fundraising guru, and a speech coach—helping students and alumni tell their story in front of hundreds of people at Summer Search signature events.
Katherine left Summer Search at the end of 2015 to start a new chapter in her professional career. Now, nearly two years later, we caught up with her to see what she has been up to, and how she is staying connected to Summer Search. Continue reading Storytelling with Katherine Kennedy
As you may have noticed, we’ve been celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year and reflecting on the impact Summer Search has had on thousands of students. And as we look ahead to our next 25 years, we’re excited to see our first generation of leaders carrying on the Summer Search legacy, and passing the torch to the next generation.
In part 1 of our Ripple Effect series, we introduced you to Natalya, a Summer Search alum who encouraged her own daughter (Mila) to follow in her footsteps and embark on a challenging, life-changing summer experience.
Well, Natalya wasn’t the only one.

One of the many great things about the work that we do is getting to see our Summer Searchers grow right before our eyes. As our mission states, we help young people develop the skills they need to become college-educated leaders who give back to their families and communities. And since we have been around for 25 years, we have been fortunate to see a LOT of growth, and a LOT of giving back.
