Last month, the Summer Search community gathered together to discuss and answer the central question: How do we create an inclusive and innovative community?
This conversation was led by Summer Search Philadelphia, who re-imagined their annual event to meet the moment and the movement of 2020, reflecting the desire for all of us in the nonprofit, private, and government sectors to pursue profound and sustainable change.
The format of the discussion was a Charrette, a meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and design solutions, featuring voices of Philadelphia students, alumni, board members, staff, and key business leaders.
At Summer Search, our staff and participants are passionate about achieving racial equity and liberation and strongly believe that everyone has the right to succeed in the path they choose for themselves.
Black History Month offers us the opportunity to reflect on our country’s history of racial inequality, honor leaders of color, and continue to drive progress towards a more equitable society. At Summer Search, we keep Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) at the forefront of our conversations and work all year long, so our staff, students, alumni, and board are equipped to be ED&I change-makers in their own communities.
A few months ago, Summer Search held an Industry Leadership Panel on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at our National Alumni Summit and Leadership Conference, a multi-day convening of nearly 300 Summer Search alumni to connect, learn, and network. The panel discussion offered alumni the chance to hear from three industry leaders about the opportunities and challenges in building more equitable and inclusive workplaces.

The following is a guest post written by Summer Search Boston alumnus Ronald Germán. Ronald is currently a Sales Consultant at State Street Corporation, the development chair of the Boston Alumni Board, and recently served as co-chair of the 2018 Boston Leadership Dinner.

As an alumnus of our Boston program, I can tell you firsthand my life and career have benefitted greatly from my time with Summer Search — from the opportunities, to the connections, to the continuous support and encouragement.

Last month, we sent a team of Summer Search staff to the 2018 National Mentoring Summit in Washington, DC. Our National Director of Research and Evaluation, Salem Valentino, Ph.D., shared her reflections from the conference in this guest blog post.
This is my sixth year as a researcher in the field of mentoring and also my sixth year attending the National Mentoring Summit. While that may not seem like an extensive period in anyone’s professional career, the field of mentoring has rapidly evolved during those six years.

As the calendar turns from summer to fall, many students across the country are preparing to step onto college campuses. For many, it will be their first time. For others, this will be a familiar experience. In either case, it’s one step in what can be a long, challenging journey towards earning a degree.
Luckily, there are people like Summer Search Seattle alumna Marie Angeles who are working hard to make sure these young people are entering a welcoming and supportive campus environment.

We recently sent our very own Rich Robinson, staff mentor at Summer Search New York City, to the Campaign for Black Male AchievementBold Goal Planning Session, a national conversation focused on generating ideas for improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in America. On March 15 I arrived in Baltimore, Maryland to participate in a strategy session for the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), a national network of nonprofits led by friend of Summer Search, Shawn Dove.
