It’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives.
At Summer Search, mentoring is our everything! Unlike many other youth organizations, we partner our students with a full-time, professionally-trained staff mentor who builds an authentic and long-lasting relationship. Our mentors work incredibly hard to form honest and trusting relationships with their students, to remind them that their voices matter, and to be there for them in their personal and academic lives.
We are so fortunate to have a team of dedicated mentors doing this work across our five regions, making those real-life impacts, day-in, and day-out. Continue reading Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1
As the calendar turns from summer to fall, many students across the country are preparing to step onto college campuses. For many, it will be their first time. For others, this will be a familiar experience. In either case, it’s one step in what can be a long, challenging journey towards earning a degree.
Luckily, there are people like Summer Search Seattle alumna Marie Angeles who are working hard to make sure these young people are entering a welcoming and supportive campus environment.

“I just love to help people.”
That’s one of the things Philadelphia Summer Searcher Shakya Geiger told reporters from Channel 6 ABC during the taping of a special program called “Best of the Class for 2017,” which honored academic achievement among high school valedictorians from Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Northern Delaware.
Members of the “Best of the Class for 2017” discuss their future goals. Shakya comes in around 2:20.

Meet Areli Hernandez, a Bay Area Summer Searcher currently in her second year at Santa Clara University (SCU).
In addition to her impressive course-load as a triple major (yes, triple!) in Political Science, Spanish, and Ethnic Studies, (with a minor in Latin American Studies) and staying involved on campus as a student ambassador, Areli recently got accepted into the Fulbright Summer Institute in the United Kingdom! Continue reading Areli Hernandez: Scholar and Role Model
At Summer Search, we’re all about creating opportunities. We offer our students exposure to experiences they might not otherwise have, which we are able to do thanks in large part to the generous support from our partners.
Summer Search New York City’s partnership with the leading global prestige beauty company The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) is a model example. Continue reading Shared Values: The “Makeup” of a Great Partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies
Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a little slice of what’s going on at Summer Search.
It’s graduation season!
At the end of May we celebrated #ProofPointDay by honoring a few of our first-generation college graduates. Since 92% of Summer Searchers are first-gen, we can, and do, celebrate first-gen successes all year long.
In fact, a few weeks ago, a group of five New York City Summer Searchers all became the first in their families to graduate from college! Continue reading #Snapshot: Five First-Gen Faces
The Summer Search family just got a whole lot bigger!

Let us introduce you to one more Summer Searcher who is an inspiring proof point of first-gen success. #ProofPointDay Continue reading First-Gen Voices, Part 2: Jay
This Friday, May 27 is Proof Point Day, a time to bring visibility and voice to the hundreds of thousands of first-generation college graduates in the United States.
We are so proud to see a national initiative that honors those who are the first in their family to graduate college. 92% of Summer Searchers are first-gen, and as the #ProofPointDay mission states, first-gen leaders are “worthy of celebration — being the first wasn’t easy.” That’s an understatement! At Summer Search, our mentors and College Access and Success staff form deep connections with our students. They work step-by-step with them to build college-going mindsets and behaviors, and to navigate the process that will ultimately lead them on the path to college. And it works!
We asked a few of our high school seniors to sit down with their mentors to discuss their college-bound journeys. Our students even got to flip the script and ask some interview-style questions of their own!
So, sit back, relax, press play and enjoy listening to College Bound, Episode One: Continue reading Press Play >> College Bound, Ep. 1
