Recently, we introduced you to Summer Search Philadelphia star Shakya Geiger, the valedictorian of the Mariana Bracetti Academy (MBA) class of 2017.
Her speech at the MBA graduation ceremony last month was full of inspiration, humor, and gratitude, thanking her family, classmates, teachers, and Summer Search mentors for their support in her journey. She also encouraged her fellow graduates to follow her lead and not be afraid to take a chance on their dreams.

“I just love to help people.”
That’s one of the things Philadelphia Summer Searcher Shakya Geiger told reporters from Channel 6 ABC during the taping of a special program called “Best of the Class for 2017,” which honored academic achievement among high school valedictorians from Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Northern Delaware.

Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a glimpse of what’s going on at Summer Search.
Before we’re completely immersed in the month of June—with graduations and students preparing to leave on their summer experiences—we look back on May, an extremely meaningful month in the college application calendar. The beginning of May is the official deadline for most high school seniors to make their final decisions about where they’ll be going to college.
Throughout the month, our senior Summer Searchers, many of whom will be the first in their families to make the journey to college, have been celebrating this important milestone. It’s the culmination of all the hard work they’ve put into researching schools, writing personal statements, sending in applications, navigating financial aid, and choosing the best fit with their families and mentors. At the end of May we celebrated #ProofPointDay by honoring a few of our first-generation college graduates. Since 92% of Summer Searchers are first-gen, we can, and do, celebrate first-gen successes all year long.
