Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1

It’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives.

At Summer Search, mentoring is our everything! Unlike many other youth organizations, we partner our students with a full-time, professionally-trained staff mentor who builds an authentic and long-lasting relationship. Our mentors work incredibly hard to form honest and trusting relationships with their students, to remind them that their voices matter, and to be there for them in their personal and academic lives.

We are so fortunate to have a team of dedicated mentors doing this work across our five regions, making those real-life impacts, day-in, and day-out. Continue reading Why I’m a Mentor, Part 1

2016 Summer Travelers

Summer is officially here!

For many, this means vacations, barbecues and relaxing days at the beach are on the itinerary.

Now, while those kinds of things are all well and good, what we are MOST excited about this time of year is the chance for our Summer Searchers — who are mostly first-generation college-bound students from low-income communities — to each have a challenging and transformative summer experience. Toni Ann – Ready for Takeoff

Here at Summer Search, we are not only in the heart of the holiday season, but also in the middle of the college application season, when high schoolers across the country are preparing, filling out and submitting applications for the colleges/universities they hope to attend.

Thank You x7

‘Tis the season for giving thanks!

Here at Summer Search, we love saying “thank you.” In fact, one of our core values is to “say ‘Thank You’ seven times.”

But why seven times? This concept came from our founder Linda Mornell, who never asked for more support until she said “thank you,” seven times. So, while this idea was initially conceived as a fundraising tactic, it has inspired an organizational-wide culture of gratitude.

In that spirit, here are seven messages of thanks, from seven great, and grateful, Summer Searchers. #ThankYouX7

SAT Vocab, Summer Search Style

With SAT season getting underway next week (the first test of the new academic year is Oct. 3!!), high school students across the country are preparing to take the nation’s most widely used college admission test.

For those of us who have already taken the SATs, each year we breathe a sigh of relief for the fact that we no longer have to spend time memorizing formidable (causing fear or apprehension) lists of vocabulary words.
