At Summer Search, gratitude is part of everything we do. One of our core values is to “say thank you seven times.”
So, while that means we don’t need an excuse to express gratitude, we were beyond excited that yesterday was “Thank Your Mentor Day” (part of National Mentoring Month)!
This was an opportunity for our students, alumni, and staff to reflect on the ways their lives have benefited from a caring, supportive relationship with a mentor, and for them to say thank you. Continue reading Thanking Your Mentor
Mentoring is a critical component in young people’s lives, helping them make the decisions that ultimately lead to improved opportunities and connections, which has an impact in real life.
As part of part of National Mentoring Month, today is “I am a Mentor Day.” This is a chance for the dedicated people who are making those real life impacts to step into the spotlight and talk about why they choose to be a mentor, and how doing so has impacted their own lives.
Here are three Summer Search mentors who were kind enough to share their stories. #MentorIRL Continue reading I am a Mentor, 2017
Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a little slice of what’s going on at Summer Search.
It’s officially a new year, and more importantly, it’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives. #NationalMentoringMonth
This is especially meaningful for us at Summer Search, because mentoring is our lifeblood. That means that we could not do what we do without the hard work and dedication of our mentors! Continue reading #Snapshot: Mentor Trainings
As we wrap up National Mentoring Month, we recently sent our very own Sandra LaFleur, Vice President of Program, to the 2016 National Mentoring Summit. Here is what she learned, in her own words:
This year, the national mentoring “movement” is recognizing its 25th anniversary. This milestone is very special to me personally, because my own career in youth development began around the same time.
Back then, I was fresh out of graduate school, taking what I thought would be a short break before resuming my doctoral studies. I took the opportunity to work for an organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters, where I felt I could apply my talents, stretch my brain and feed my soul. At the time, “mentoring” was quickly becoming a buzzword, and with the recent release of groundbreaking research validating the impact of mentoring on youth outcomes, those were exciting times of growth and promise. Last week, Summer Search was invited to participate in an engaging online conversation about one of our favorite topics…
In honor of National Mentoring Month, our friends at iMentor hosted the #Mentor4Success Twitter Chat. They invited several organizations (including both mentoring orgs and their supporting partners, like the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation) for a discussion about ideas and key issues surrounding the importance of mentoring in youth development, as well as ways to work together to improve outcomes for young people across the country.
Here are some of the highlights… Continue reading Mentoring For Success
In 2015, Summer Search became a proud recipient of the Super Bowl 50 Fund’s “Game Changer” Award, a $500,000 grant over three years to support our Bay Area students. As the name suggests, this grant is a real game changer for our Bay Area sites, as it will allow us to serve even more students who are, in turn, changing the game and the status quo for their own lives and their communities.
One such game changer is Alexis Flores.
When we first met Alexis, he was as a self-conscious 15 year-old who was buried in his schoolwork and chores, unaware of the opportunities around him and unsure of his own leadership potential. Continue reading Alexis: Game Changer
As part of National Mentoring Month, today we’re continuing to celebrate “I am a Mentor Day,” when mentors everywhere are encouraged to share their stories about why they do what they do, and the impact that being a mentor has had on their lives. #NationalMentoringMonth

As Summer Search’s mentors prepare to interview new high school sophomores (who are hoping to become Summer Searchers), we’re flipping the script on our mentors and interviewing THEM about their own mentoring experiences. Here’s what a few of them said… Continue reading I am a Mentor
