Last month, we announced that Summer Search was a finalist in the third annual Renewal Awards, a national competition recognizing local organizations driving positive change in their communities.
Thanks to Allstate, The Atlantic, and everyone in our community who voted for Summer Search, we won the runner-up prize of a $10,000 grant!

January was an exciting month at Summer Search.
Our high school mentors have been busy deepening their relationships with our students, helping them integrate the reflections from their summer experiences into their lives, while also placing juniors on their second summer programs and preparing to welcome a whole new class of sophomores to Summer Search. Our College Access and Success mentors were also hard at work supporting students with college applications, financial aid, and their pursuits of their bachelor’s degrees. Plus, we announced a cool partnership with Chris Long and Michelle Obama, and we celebrated National Mentoring Month!
We were also excited to welcome two new senior leaders to the organization: Nick Hutchinson, our Chief Operating Officer, and Ching Tao, Vice President of Finance.
Nick and Ching have definitely hit the ground running to start the new year, and while the two of them have been busy getting to know Summer Search, they were kind enough to answer a few questions to help our Summer Search community get to know them. Continue reading Meet Nick and Ching
As our name suggests, we believe that summer is a big deal.
Upon enrolling in Summer Search, our students participate in unique experiential opportunities during the summers following their sophomore and junior years of high school. These experiences help our young leaders (in partnership with their mentors) reflect on and learn from their triumphs and setbacks, which serves to strengthen the skills and mindsets needed for the journey to and through college.
But what about the summer after high school graduation, right before stepping onto a college campus? In addition to supporting our students as they make that huge transition, Summer Search Boston has been partnering with John Hancock in order to provide additional summer opportunities for our college-bound grads. Recently, leaders of the Summer Search alumni community were invited to share input on which qualities we would like to see in Summer Search’s next CEO. The call with Summer Search’s National Senior Director of Talent Acquisition, Dana Hagenbuch, and Commongood Careers (a search firm that focuses exclusively on nonprofit leadership searches) focused on uncovering key priorities, including how a new leader could inspire greater alumni engagement. Today, Summer Search joined a coalition of more than 180 nonprofit organizations in an open letter to President Donald Trump.
The letter, published by the Skoll Foundation, respectfully disagrees with the Executive Order banning individuals from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States.
Here are a few particularly powerful excerpts: Continue reading Summer Search Signs Open Letter to President
At Summer Search, the work we do is important, and it isn’t easy. That’s why we are so grateful to have such an amazing and talented team of superstars who are dedicated to helping young people soar.
We are also grateful, and extremely honored, to have recently been named one of the “50 Best Nonprofits to Work For” by The NonProfit Times for the fourth year in a row! What makes this designation extra special is that it comes from our staff, as these rankings are derived from a nationwide survey of staff members at nonprofit organizations.
