The following is a guest post written by Yarelie Magallon, an intern on the Summer Search National Marketing team.
Hi everyone! My name is Yarelie Magallon and I’ve spent my summer as a Marketing Intern working at Summer Search’s national office in San Francisco. Throughout the course of the summer, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with a number of Summer Search staff, including two other Summer Search interns, and I noticed something: all three of us (interns) have a similar background and had no previous affiliation with Summer Search, yet we were drawn to join this organization.
Why? I find that within communities of shared experiences, there is some sense to give back to those who have gone through the same thing. Each of our histories led us to where we are today. Here is just a little bit about who we are, why we chose Summer Search, and what we do!

At Summer Search, we’re always looking for ways to help our students strengthen the skills they need to thrive in school and in life. Sometimes those opportunities come from community partners and organizations in our own backyard – not just in the wilderness of Colorado or the Costa Rican jungle.
Last month, about 15 Summer Search Bay Area college students and alumni were invited to a special career development event at the corporate headquarters of transportation network giant Lyft in San Francisco. Continue reading Summer Search Joins Lyft’s Community Week
Reflecting on their lives is a key part of every Summer Searcher’s journey. After our high school sophomores complete their first summer program, they write a reflection letter to process their Summer Search experience thus far.
This is an opportunity to put into words who they are, and to take an honest look back at the challenges, triumphs, and growth that has happened since joining Summer Search. It’s a practice that, alongside their weekly conversations with their mentors, helps students integrate these profound summer experiences into their lives, as well as a chance to practice writing a personal statement for college.
These pieces are generally composed after the summer programs are completed during the start of the students’ junior years. Not everyone writes a reflection ten years later… but that’s just what Bay Area alumnus Alvin Sng did! Continue reading A Summer Reflection… 10 Years Later
The following is a message from Jim Milligan, Summer Search’s National Board Chair.

If you walk into our Summer Search office in Oakland, one thing you’ll see, along with our mentors and students buzzing around, is a large, colorful mural that adorns the wall of our glass-enclosed conference room.
Not only a beautiful addition to our office space, this work of art has significant meaning behind it — it was conceived of and painted specifically for Summer Search by Bay Area alumnus, and local artist, Ivan Lopez. Continue reading Ivan Lopez: An Artist’s Inspiration
Welcome to another edition of #Snapshot, where we bring you a little slice of what’s going on at Summer Search.
It’s officially a new year, and more importantly, it’s National Mentoring Month, a time when organizations across the country shine the light on the importance of mentoring relationships in young people’s lives. #NationalMentoringMonth
This is especially meaningful for us at Summer Search, because mentoring is our lifeblood. That means that we could not do what we do without the hard work and dedication of our mentors! Continue reading #Snapshot: Mentor Trainings
