We recently sent our very own Rich Robinson, staff mentor at Summer Search New York City, to the Campaign for Black Male Achievement Bold Goal Planning Session, a national conversation focused on generating ideas for improving the life outcomes of black men and boys in America. Here is what Rich learned, in his own words.
On March 15 I arrived in Baltimore, Maryland to participate in a strategy session for the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), a national network of nonprofits led by friend of Summer Search, Shawn Dove.
“Is your goal bold enough?” was both a proclamation and the guiding question posed to all the attendees. When Ron Walker, Executive Director of the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color, challenged us with this question, I felt the weight of the gauntlet laid down before us. Here at Summer Search, we are developing plans to better support our Black and Latino men through our Males of Color Initiative. Specifically, that means enhancing our outreach and enrollment practices to increase the number of Black and Latino male students referred to, and enrolled in Summer Search.
We are also encouraged to see that, across the country, there is a groundswell of recognition of the systemic and institutionalized barriers surrounding these young men, and the need to better serve them. Continue reading Changing the Narrative: It Takes a Village

The week started off with Summer Search New York City’s Young Leadership Committee (YLC) Cocktail Event. The YLC is a group of young professionals who share Summer Search’s commitment to college success for all youth in New York City.
