For many, this means vacations, barbecues and relaxing days at the beach are on the itinerary.
Now, while those kinds of things are all well and good, what we are MOST excited about this time of year is the chance for our Summer Searchers — who are mostly first-generation college-bound students from low-income communities — to each have a challenging and transformative summer experience. As we wrap up National Mentoring Month, we recently sent our very own Sandra LaFleur, Vice President of Program, to the 2016 National Mentoring Summit. Here is what she learned, in her own words:
This year, the national mentoring “movement” is recognizing its 25th anniversary. This milestone is very special to me personally, because my own career in youth development began around the same time.
Back then, I was fresh out of graduate school, taking what I thought would be a short break before resuming my doctoral studies. I took the opportunity to work for an organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters, where I felt I could apply my talents, stretch my brain and feed my soul. At the time, “mentoring” was quickly becoming a buzzword, and with the recent release of groundbreaking research validating the impact of mentoring on youth outcomes, those were exciting times of growth and promise. One of the cornerstones of the Summer Search model is, as our name suggests, our summer trips! We send our students on two challenging summer experiences during their sophomore and junior years of high school. These trips give our young travelers the chance to take healthy risks, develop their leadership skills and discover strength and confidence that they never knew they had. Basically, they find their inner superstar… and soar! #LifeChanging
