Making a Difference: Summer Search to the Peace Corps

“My experience with Summer Search pushed me to believe in myself and realize I am capable of more than I know. The Summer Search family truly saw my potential even when I did not, and when a young person realizes that there are people who are rooting for them, that can make all the difference.”

That’s Dalia Martin Del Campo, a Summer Search Bay Area alumna who is currently making a difference in Peru as a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV).

Partners in Professional Development

At Summer Search, our work is all about creating opportunities. We offer our students exposure to many different experiences they might not otherwise have, which we’re able to do thanks in large part to the generous support from our many partners. Donors, summer program partners, and corporate partners are all critical to our young people’s success.

Speaking of corporate partners, Summer Search teams up with outstanding companies to provide our students with internships and professional development opportunities. In fact, several hire our alumni! In this post, we’re proud to highlight four of our partners that hosted Summer Search student interns this summer. Summer Search Joins Lyft’s Community Week

At Summer Search, we’re always looking for ways to help our students strengthen the skills they need to thrive in school and in life. Sometimes those opportunities come from community partners and organizations in our own backyard – not just in the wilderness of Colorado or the Costa Rican jungle.

Last month, about 15 Summer Search Bay Area college students and alumni were invited to a special career development event at the corporate headquarters of transportation network giant Lyft in San Francisco. Continue reading Summer Search Joins Lyft’s Community Week

Community Matters: Rallying Support After the Wildfires

Our hearts are still heavy about the devastating wildfires in the North Bay that have affected so many people.

In difficult times like these, turning to community is more important than ever. At Summer Search, our Bay Area team has been all-hands-on-deck reaching out to our students — many of whom live in the affected areas of Santa Rosa, Napa, and St. Helena — to ensure they and their families are safe, connected to resources, and have space to process together. A Summer Reflection… 10 Years Later

Reflecting on their lives is a key part of every Summer Searcher’s journey. After our high school sophomores complete their first summer program, they write a reflection letter to process their Summer Search experience thus far.

This is an opportunity to put into words who they are, and to take an honest look back at the challenges, triumphs, and growth that has happened since joining Summer Search. It’s a practice that, alongside their weekly conversations with their mentors, helps students integrate these profound summer experiences into their lives, as well as a chance to practice writing a personal statement for college.

These pieces are generally composed after the summer programs are completed during the start of the students’ junior years. Not everyone writes a reflection ten years later… but that’s just what Bay Area alumnus Alvin Sng did! Continue reading A Summer Reflection… 10 Years Later

Young Professionals Stepping Up for Summer Search

We’re all about young leaders. Summer Search’s mission is to help students from low-income backgrounds strengthen the skills needed to become college graduates and leaders in their communities.

However, there are other young leaders that are playing a significant role in the Summer Search world. These are groups of altruistic young professionals who are dedicated to supporting our mission. They go by different names across the Summer Search network — there’s Boston’s Young Leadership Committee (YLC), Philadelphia’s Young Professional’s Network (YPN), and Seattle’s Alumni Board, while the Bay Area and New York City both refer to their respective groups as the Associate Board (AB). #ICYMI: Daring to Invest in Future Leaders

Corporate partnerships are important to Summer Search’s success for many reasons, and global investment management company BlackRock has recently gone above and beyond by financially supporting two of our regions as well as providing volunteer support.

Earlier this summer, BlackRock hosted our Bay Area Annual “Dare to Lead” Conference, an all-day series of career readiness workshops to support our college students as they prepare for life post-graduation. Continue reading #ICYMI: Daring to Invest in Future Leaders
